We envision local communities with their own trained digital mentors, eliminating reliance on predatory middlemen or commercial cyber cafes for basic civic tasks.
Rooted in Amritsar, Punjab
Literating India Foundation was born out of a stark observation in the villages surrounding Amritsar. As everyday banking, crop procurement tokens, electricity payments, and state pension schemes shifted entirely to mobile applications and biometric portals, an invisible wall emerged for millions of non-technical citizens.
Middlemen charged steep commissions just to download a pension slip. Elderly citizens living on modest stipends were routinely defrauded by scam callers impersonating bank managers or electricity department officials. High school students had smartphones for entertainment but lacked fundamental awareness of digital security, academic verification, or career tools.
In early 2023, a small cohort of college educators, tech professionals, and youth volunteers organized their first weekend camp in a community hall in Majitha. Thirty-eight participants attended — ranging from a 68-year-old retired clerk seeking to track his DBT pension to a 19-year-old first-generation college student.
The impact was immediate and profound. Participants didn't just learn button clicks; they gained the confidence to navigate the modern world without vulnerability. That single workshop evolved into a structured civic movement that now spans dozens of districts.
How We Work: The 4-Step Community Model
Our approach is built around genuine empathy, vernacular communication, and continuous community support.
Localized Needs Assessment
Before entering a village or neighborhood, our field coordinators consult local Panchayat leaders, self-help groups, and elders to identify specific digital pain points — whether it is crop insurance portals, electricity bill scams, or scholarship forms.
Vernacular & Visual Pedagogy
We eliminate complex jargon. All modules are taught in native Punjabi and conversational Hindi with large visual flashcards, real-life roleplays of scam calls, and step-by-step printed pocket guides that participants take home.
Hands-on Peer Mentorship
Rather than lecture halls, our workshops use small circles with a 1:3 mentor-to-learner ratio. Participants practice directly on their own mobile devices, learning how to verify SMS alerts, manage UPI PINs, and spot fraudulent links.
Ongoing Walk-in Safety Net
Education is only effective when backed by continuous support. We establish weekly physical helpdesks in community centers where citizens can walk in anytime for one-on-one assistance with grievance filing or suspicious message verification.
Our Pledge to Data Privacy & Non-Commercial Independence
Literating India Foundation never collects sensitive citizen credentials, passwords, or biometric data. We never sell software products, promote commercial banking apps, or charge fees for our training. All our curriculum guides are openly licensed and free for public use.

Zero-Cost Policy
Every training session, printed guide, and helpdesk interaction is 100% free for all citizens. We do not sell commercial software or promote sponsored apps.
Vernacular First
We teach in Punjabi and conversational Hindi. Technical terms are demystified through everyday analogies and visual flowcharts rather than English jargon.
Dignity in Learning
We create a patient, shame-free space for adult learners and seniors. No question is too basic, and repetition is encouraged until full confidence is achieved.
Open-Source Curriculum
All our teaching materials, safety checklists, and pocket manuals are openly licensed under Creative Commons for schools, panchayats, and NGOs across India.
